Hip Hop Samples

Like a kick drum, snare (a clap or finger snap can be used in place or side by side with this), high-hat and various other instruments. How complex or simple you want it to be is entirely up to you. once you have a loop ( a single piece that covers usually two to four bars) you can plug it in with your melody. Next up in your rap beat is the bass line. Now as we all know, the bass line is the backbone to any song. It is the simple melody (or a kick drum in many cases) that we all like to hear pounding out a set of 12's in the trunk.

It is the simple melody (or a kick drum in many cases) that we all like to hear pounding out a set of 12’s in the trunk.

Make rap beats

Yall know what i’m talkin about. The order of the steps that you take to build your beat is up to you but
I like to hold off on the bass because I want to make it fit just right with the beat. Ask any one and the will tell you the bass line is usually the most important thing to focus on. Usually I like to make it similar in pitch and tone to the melody but at the same time, enhance and punctuate my drum track. This can be a very difficult process. Once you have that right pound and mixture with your track is when you know it’s done. Now on to filler. A lot of artists out there put different noises and sound effects into there tracks to enhance the sound.

Rap beats

For instance, would you think a shotgun or an explosion is a musical instrument? Alone no… but when combined with hard hitting rap beats and some over the top lyrics, it can be that one thing thats gets your song on the radio! Now this is just an example but you got to broaden your horizons to make something unique. When you plug different effects to portray a certain emotion or message, it can really boost a verse. Next step is to start mixing down the song. This is a process were you stretch all your created loops to create your song. Now most songs have a certain structure. You have an intro, the first hook, the first verse, hook, verse, (repeat this as needed), outro. Now an intro is usually used to build up the intensity or introduce the listener to your track. Then I like to go into the hook.

Producing hip hop beats can be considered by many as an art form in it’s self. From personal experience, I have noticed that it takes a great amount of skill and effort to make a “musical masterpiece”. Often people who make rap beats have to gain access to various programs and multiple pieces of recording and electronic equipment. Such as: a USB or MIDI microphone, drum machines, voice editing software, a music production program (I use fruity loops 8.0) just to name a few.

Make rap beats

Now the first step I always take in this process is to write down the lyrics or have the artist that I am working with do so. Now it is perfectly O.K. to skip this protion if you are only intrested in making beats. Then my next step is to create a melody or the main musical structure of the instrumental that I am working on. This often sets the feel and flow of the song. It just tends to make the process that much easier.

Now once you have a good melody layed down it is time to work on the drum portion. Now it is really important that you know what the tempo or speed of the song is in order to make it sound right. If you have a fast paced melody and a slow drum track, 99% of the time it won’t sound right. First step to take is to load the samples that you are going to use (this applies to the melody too).

Hip Hop samples

Often you can just right click on the preset instrument and load the paticular sample that you would like to use. You can also find sample packs on various web sites if you want to obtain more. Once your chosen instrument is in place, you can start consructing your drum track. I often start out setting up my drum track with the basic instruments.

LeeNo is a certified HHA vet, badboy and O.G. The man who dominated the HHA battle scene and even started and ran the O.R. Thanks to Lethal for conducting the interview.

Artist Interview - LeeNo

HipHopAve: Lets start off with a small introduction.

O.G. LeeN: well shit I’m Leeno…. been backin battlers off the ave for awhile now. Doing my thing. I innovate shit that ave aint ready for, as well as introduce ish. Bottom line, I’m the best pound 4 pound battler on THEE ave text/audio.

HipHopAve: How long have you been on the Ave?

O.G. LeeN: I haven’t been counting, but a max 3yrs!

HipHopAve: How long have you been into hip hop?

O.G. LeeN: Since 1995, n’ I been rhyming since 1995… not steadily but that’s when I 1st was inna studio; as far as hip hop; I was listening to ll cool j when he 1st dropped “momma said knock u out”….. so u can say I was raised on rap.

HipHopAve: So, what’s your favorite thing about hip hop nowadays?

O.G. LeeN: How “I” can create shit….. I really don’t care about the weezies n souljah boys n shit like dat…….. I care about what I do n what the innovators do like Nas/saigon/joelortiz/kanye/Jay-z does……. other than that underground is cool BUT u just need to b creative period……n this is from a 80’s baby’s perspective……………..

HipHopAve: What would you change about hip hop?

O.G. LeeN: I would change it back to the golden age……… I wish I was born earlier so I could blow…. period

HipHopAve: Which Rap artists do you consider the greats of all time?

O.G. LeeN: Jay-z….. even tho he claims 2 b a 80’s babies rapper he wasn’t born in da 80’s……..that’s what happened 4 real 80’s kids got skipped n dats y u hear all dis bullshit

HipHopAve: Based on the growing trends of hip hop, do you think it will remain a focal point in Popular culture? If so, at what expense?

O.G. LeeN: yes I do!……. I think young white kids will define who sells……… N its bullshit str8 up n down. young white kids n’ urban females determine who blow, urban white kids can only understand the surface…… n urban females just wanna dance. nobody cares about lyrics no more n dats y u hear all dis bullshit….not to mention the #1 factor …. ITS BIG BUSINESS!

N’ the expense is niggas will conform to make dollars versus advancing the culture which truly is OURS n IS MEANT FOR ADVANCING

(PAC N BIG R PISSED RIGHT NOW)

HipHopAve: So what have you been up to lately, career wise?

O.G. LeeN: lately me, I’ve been fallin back!…… tryin to school the younger gen. on the ave…. which I’ve been doing for the time I been here, like I had my time to shine n’ w/e….. I carried 2 independent labels with my lyrics W.U.N ENT/RISK TAKERZ. I was the ceo of risk takerz but shit fell thru cuz I was engineering most the time instead of recording. (I went to school 4 music engineering) I make bread regardless tho; outside of rap I’m payin mortgage on a 125,000 crib
n’ I have a 2004 range rover discovery paid for…….. so I’m doin me to the 60% fullest, I say that cuz I have no licence lol

HipHopAve: What do You think about Lil Wayne, The carter 3, and his claim of being one of the best of all time?

O.G. LeeN: I’m better than Wayne lyrically.. Hands down

HipHopAve: What do you see yourself doing in 5-10 years?

O.G. LeeN: 5-10 yrs I’ll at least b a millionaire…. n not off rap

HipHopAve: Who have some of your biggest influences been?

O.G. LeeN: Rap wise - notorious BIG & nas. My father was a one hit wonder n my mother paints portraits - one sick ass writer……..so both of them……RIP JOHN SCALES JR…. my father

HipHopAve: What/who; is your favorite movie, video game, album, track, artist, food, sport, & female?

O.G. LeeN: belly……..cod4…… life after death……. I’m ur pusha man- Curtis mayfield………. killah priest…. chines food…….nfl football(real football) Alicia keys

HipHopAve: How do you feel about online text rapping?

O.G. LeeN: I think text is da 6th element to hip hop

There’s 5 elements to hip hop…. rapping…graffiti…….DJ-ing…….break dancing……. etc… text, I FEEL is da 6th element

HipHopAve: Lets do some word association.

Rap beats

For those of us who aren’t as lucky, there are other ways to get rap beats. For one, anyone who is looking to download rap beats can find them all over the internet. It’s the premium ones that are damn near impossible to find.

Using a unique beat is essential. Anything that can be easily picked up and used by anyone isn’t going to give you a professional sound. Sure, if you’re just messing around or looking for something good for your myspace page, there’s nothing wrong with using a mainstream rap beat.

Download rap beats

However, if you’re looking to get noticed by A&R reps, its going to be tough unless you’re using premium rap beats. I’ll be using the next series of posts to show you how to get rap beats and how to make rap beats if that’s what you’re looking for.

Next up: where to get the best premium rap beats.

This is the first in a series of articles on HHA about how you can become a rap music producer. This will be a guide to becoming a rap producer and producing rap music.

Why produce rap music?

Rap music producers are the ones making the big money out there. Dr.Dre, Sky Storch, Timbaland, hell even Kanye made his name producing rap music.

Even if you’re an aspiring artist, producing your own rap music means you’ll have a better chance of getting noticed. Everyone has freestyles and tracks over mainstream beats, but only you will have a song over your beat.

Buying produced beats

For some of you, producing rap beats might be a bit out of your league. If you don’t have the time to learn, buying beats might be more worth it for you. There are a few sites where buying beats is actually worth it, I’ll post em up in time.

Rap music producers make quality beats

It’s not all that hard to make a beat. It is much harder to make a good beat. Although it’s hard to tell what constitutes a good beat, you do generally know if your beat is a banger.

A new blogspot site also has good information for rap music producers.

Start producing your rap music

Here’s the challenge to all of you–read these articles and start producing your own rap music. Be on the lookout for beat competitions, free tools and more free guides.

Artist Interview - Inc

HipHopAve Interviews

HipHopAve: Lets start off with a small introduction.

Inc: They call me Inc. I’m 20 years old. I’m white, very white; Extremely attractive. Beautiful blue eyes. And I’m not too bad at this rapping thing.. I was born in Meriden, CT - raised with my grandmother in Lower Manhattan, then moved back to CT for high school.. Went to Central CT State University for a year, transferred to the University of Washington. Then to Seattle University. Now, nowhere.. Ha ha..

HipHopAve: How long have you been on the Ave?

Inc: Um, I’d say a little over a year. It was a couple months before the big “crash”..no, not the one LeeN’s cousins did on the WTC’s, lmao..

HipHopAve: How long have you been into hip hop?

Inc: As long as I can remember. More from my Mom’s side though. she’s young, Sooo; she was into the whole Vanilla Ice-type thing.. My Dad’s too white..

HipHopAve: What would you say got you into hip hop?

Inc: The swagger. The way dude’s would express how they felt or what they believed in through the clothing, their lyrics, their walk, all of it.. And it’s steady changing, so it never gets old..

HipHopAve: So, what’s your favorite thing about hip hop nowadays?

Inc: Shit, Iunno.. Hip-Hop’s gone to shit nowadays. I guess If I had to choose, I like where the clothing is going to, with Dipset & Lil Wayne for example.. All the skater-type shirts & tighter fitting pants.. Looks better than wearing a night-gown to school down to your knees, lol..

HipHopAve: What would you change about hip hop?

Inc : First and foremost, kill Soulja Boy, and every other good-for-nothing rapper than gets a deal because of a dance.. After that, I’d find where Tupac & Biggie are hiding and do a track with them, then retire..

HipHopAve: How do you feel about these new “radio artists“, such as Solja boy, plies, T-pain.

Inc: ^See above lmao^.. Soulja Boy can lick my taint, along with Plies.. T-Pain ain’t that bad, I respect how he’s making money.. Like I said, just because you made up a dance doesn’t mean you can rap.. Shit, If that’s the case, what are we doing wasting our time on the Ave? Let’s B-Boy!! lmao..

HipHopAve: How about some of the “Smart rappers” that have started to emerge; Ex: Lupe Fiasco

Inc: I can dig it to a certain extent. I mean, I’m well-educated, so most of their vocab doesn’t go above my head.. I respect them trying to start a new type of movement in hip-hop, but I’d LOVE to hear a happy-medium of the street-type rap and the more complex artists.. That’d get my pee-pee moving ..

HipHopAve: So what have YOU been up to lately?

Inc: Ehh, just got married, yippe-fucking-doo.. Got a kid on the way as well, hooray for that! Lost my basketball scholarship though, smh @ that.. Word to the wise, If any of ya’ll do any type of sports in the NCAA, don’t take free gifts!! It’ll all screw you in the end lol.. Other than that, life’s gravy baby!

HipHopAve: Can you elaborate on Terrell prior; & how he “Bargained” his way into Ohio state? (*Top draft pick from high school / Big scandal)

Inc: I think he’s the fucking man! He waited till the very last second to choose Ohio State, pretty much said FUCK YOU to Michigan and anyone else who dreamed of having him.. It’d be funny as hell If he’s a bust though..

HipHopAve: What do you see yourself doing in 5-10 years?

Inc: Dead. We will all be dead.. The world’s ending in 2012, December 21st to be exact.. smh, read a fucking book!

HipHopAve: Who have some of your biggest influences been?

Inc: For one, Eminem, mainly because he broke soo many barriers for us non-colored folk.. And he’s a beast! But I <3333 punch line rappers, and when I really started to get into rap, I listened to TONS of Big L & B.I.G. << my main influences.. nowadays, I stick with Fabulous..

HipHopAve: What is your favorite movie, video game, album, track, artist, food, sport, & female aside from wifey. (I’ll send this one to you’re wife’s email!)

Inc: LOL Don’t make me kill her.. Hmm,..

Movie = Paid In Full..
Album = Ready To Die..
Track = Britney Spears “Oops! I Did It Again” << you knoooow lol..
Artist = Big L..
Food = Lasagna..
Sport = Basketball..
video game = Madden, any year..
AND female = Megan Fox, i’d definitely eat a mile of her shit JUST to see where it came from..

HipHopAve: How do you feel about online text rapping?

Inc: I enjoy it for the most part.. I HATE how fat bastards like to say there’s no skill in texting, that’s some ignorant bullshit.. Whether you’re texting, doing a topical, horror core, etc. or doing audio, in the end, you’re STILL RAPPING.. Yeah, doing it over a beat is traditionally the method that will help you in the long run, but who gives a shit? NONE of us will make it big in this shit, believe that.. Sooner people realize that, the less time I’ll spend putting them in their place..

HipHopAve: Any thing else you would like to add?

Inc: Yay! Ok, first and foremost, I love being an asshole.. It gives me great pleasure to ruin a kids day by simply posting a couple smart remarks on a rap forum.. As long as there are fat pieces of shit who think their the nicest thing on the net, yet, get MURDERED on their own track, I’ll continue doing just that! I also hate Dominicans who dick ride obese faggots just because they idolize them, right Havic? Besides that, Duty is really gay, E-Nyce has a stupid lisp AND Lethal needs to do some sit-ups ..FUCK YOUR LIFEEEEE!

..Lethal: Aww… (Exits room)

HipHopAve: Thank You for your time Inc.

Ok, what up HHA, got ya boy Havic here, he up n comin, givin vets a run for they money. Havic, let em know what up!
HaViC:
nuttin much just chillin was actually gonna start writin for my battle vrs leeno but was good ave
Solstice:
Alright, so Ima kick it off with a very simple, very played question: What got you started?
HaViC:
shit i cant even tell you but ima keep it reall when i was like 8 i used to listen to them mainstream cats like bow wow and them and i really aint care what they was sayin i only payed attention to the beats and the flow used to write down other peoples music till one day i was just like hold up i could do better then this(when i was like 10-11) and then i wrote for a bit and quit all together
HaViC:
and didnt get back into the game till i was about 15 when i started listenen to reall hiphop and now i think im at my peak but improvin on a day to day basis
Solstice:
Great to hear your still elevatin. Alright, a lot of artists today use past influences in their music. Take a look at your past, are there any moments that influence your music today? Any deaths or something like that?
HaViC:
well im from new york but was rased in vegas mostly and ive never needed anythin in my life i grew up wit my moms and no pops and for some reason i would never stay on my part of town… like u could say that i used to stay in a suburban area but that was like my sleepin spot cuz moms was always workin so u would never catch me ou t the hood and im sayin for someone that coulda grown up as a punk
HaViC:
and a spoiled ass prick i sure didnt pick that rout but yeah so basicully now im livin in dominican republic cuz of all my “good deeds” you feel me lol but i basicully get my insperation from my life, girls, and homies life’s, and i said screw all that bangin and slangin and now im on this hip hop ish workin almost 24/7

Solstice:
I feel ya on that one, gettin about 2 hours o sleep a night myself. Well, look at all the rappers throughout history… Tupac, Biggie, EZE, and all the rappers of today like Em, Jay, and NaS. Which to you respect the most, and which do you think need to have they tounge cut out?
HaViC:
lmao
HaViC:
i personally think that tupac was more of a poet he let errone know wat he wanted to say so he wasnt that lyrical wit it didnt really use metaphores and ish like that personally i hate eze his voice and all that irritates me, em is and has always been doin his thing and nas i aint been fallowin him recently but with that 1mic join he killed it.
HaViC:
personally i find it funny how cats hate on jay z i respect him cuz shit he came up spittin fire he’s made his money he has done his job and now that he gots money people dont wat him to talk about it shit let him be mainstream if he wants f***ck wat yall think if he can make 10 more mil off of his mouth then i aint hatin let the man get his paper
Solstice:
Haha! Good to see a Jay Z fan, not enough of them around.. Alright, so what about the cats on HHA? Who do you truely respect, and who do you hate?
HaViC:
well i respect ma boy’s casper, wordgames, rydin, noonz, leeno, inc, and sacryfice, oh and i cant forget my boy sydeil he the one that put me on to the ave and if it wasnt for him i prolly wouldnt be this elevated right now.
HaViC:
and i dont really hate noone on da ave but i just dont really get the point of all this text battlen i think them cats just do it for fun in my opinion. but ehhh its w/e
Solstice:
You musta read my mind, I was just about to ask you your opinion on text battling. So I take it you don’t text?
HaViC:
yeah i text but i actually do it to elevate my vocab and meta’s for my audio ish
HaViC:
and its also sometin to do
Solstice:
Ah, I see. Good practice, and a way to kill some time. Alright, so, I have checked out some of your threads, but I never did get one thing answered. Do you do GFX?
HaViC:
well sometimes i play around but ive had bad luck gettin ps so i use somethin called collage maker but notin major, but fresh is one man i truelly respect when it comes to that

Solstice:
I got ya, and Fresh does have some serious GFX skills. Ok, so I got another question for ya. If you could pick 3 dudes from HHA to do a collab with, that would go on an album nationwide, who would they be.
HaViC:
casper-wordgames-and either sacryfice or noonz thats a tuff decision on the last one
Solstice :
Id love to hear that track. Ok, now, moving on. A lot of artists are going multi genre now-days. Besides rap, what are some other genres that you enjoy?
HaViC:
hmmm r&b of course and i can put up with rock and classical music is always iight oh and at parties i listen to regueeton
Solstice:
Sweet, glad to hear you like classical. Now, we’re gettin ready to wind it down now, but I do have a few more questions. Some people dont ever want to be famous. Tell me,can you see yourself signed to a major label, rich and famous in a few years? Or would you rather just live without the paparazzi and abscence of privacy?
HaViC:
no i can and i would definitly like to be signed to a major label rich and famous lol
Solstice:
Yeah, I can see the pros of that. Okay, almost done. If you could pick any label, which would it be?
HaViC:
who is lupe signed with
Solstice:
Ya know, Im not really sure… But I think people will know what your talking about.
HaViC:
yeah well either him, aftermath or interscope, but those are just perferences but as long as i get to do my thing ima do it
Solstice:
I see. So, take a look at all the songs youve made, and tell me which you think would be your personal favorite.
HaViC:
hhhhmmmmmmmmmm thats hard besides tha fact that i have a lot of new tracks that havent been uploaded yet for a specific reason… but anyways i would have to say cryes herself to sleep wich i just posted today ft. wordgames…

Solstice:
Alright, Ill be sure to check it out. Now, last question. Any last minute messages to HHA? Shouts outs? Challenges? Anything?

Scott Wainner, a man usually associated with web revenue, has started something so big, I had to help out.

He recently posted news on his blog about how he’s helping aging research and helping to stop the aging process. We need to put the religious fanaticism in this country aside and start working on the real problems. My highest regards to Scott for doing this.

Imagine a world where getting older doesn’t mean getting weaker or more sickly. I have only done limited work with telomeres (thought to be the secret behind aging) but what I have done has been fascinating.

Make sure you visit Scott’s article at: Help Stop Aging
