Now the first step I always take in this process is to write down the lyrics or have the artist that I am working with do so. Then my next step is to create a melody or the main musical structure of the instrumental that I am working on. This often sets the feel and flow of the song. Now once you have a good melody layed down it is time to work on the drum portion. Now it is really important that you know what the tempo or speed of the song is in order to make it sound right.
