Starting a record label

This is going to be the first in a series of post on starting your own record label. People have been asking me how to start a record label.  I'm glad to see so many people interested in owning their own record label.

Why start a record label?

Getting signed to a record label is damn near impossible. Being an amazing singer, producer, artist, writer isn't good enough to get signed. To make it on a record label you need to show that you're bankable and can attract a good crowd. Is it just me, or is that bullshit?

Starting your own record label

Gives you power. Period. You are your own boss, you manage all your content, you even sign on other artists. Once you've got your own record label you don't need to prove anything to anyone. All you need to do is make good music and sell it.

Record labels make money

When a $15 record sells, artists generally make a $1 royalty. For all their hard work, artists get shit.  The other $14 goes to the record label. Now imagine cutting out the middleman. If you're the label then you're getting $15 for every record you sell. Plus you're getting $14 for every record anyone you sign sells.

Record labels earn you cash

If you do catch the eye of an exec, your record label might get bought out. Def Jam has done that with countless other smaller record labels. Then what? CHA-CHING. You get paid in the millions for a record studio to acquire your label.

Start your own record label

There will be more posts detailing how we're going to do this, but it revolves around this guide to starting a record label. WARNING: It does cost $49. Now if you're like me, then you want to get started as quickly as possible without all the legal stuff. That's why I used this guide, its an incredibly easy way to get started. Hey, if you'd rather spend hours on getting started than spending $49, be my guest.
